Kia ora e hoa mā,
saltwater love is a project started during the lockdown of Aotearoa (so called New Zealand) during the Covid-19 pandemic. The kaupapa (ethos) of this project is to create a place for all Indigenous people to send written work that engages with love in its myriad forms and promotes care for one another and the land, especially in our current state of crisis. There is no prompt. Any work that promotes or expresses love is welcome. While decolonisation is always at the forefront of our mahi (work), this zine is primarily a place for our love towards ourselves and our relations: tangata (people), animals, and whenua (the land). This is an opportunity to free ourselves of the burden of discourse for a moment and write what we feel without explanation to outsiders. Any expressions of love--platonic, romantic, sexual, or otherwise are welcome. No previous record of publishing is necessary, no qualifications are necessary, just you and your tuhi auaha (creative writing). We cannot wait to read what you send in! Take care and stay safe, Ngā mihi and HÍSW̱ḴE saltwater love is currently edited by Kōtuku Titihuia Nuttall, a creative writing Masters student at Te Herenga Waka/Victoria University of Wellington in Aotearoa. She is of Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Rangatahi, and Ngāti Tūwharetoa as well as Coast Salish (W̱SÁNEĆ) descent. |
